Learn How to Safely Use Propane

At Red River Farm Coop, safety is of the highest priority. Although propane is a safe and reliable source of energy, it can be dangerous if proper precautions are not followed. Our professionals are trained to handle potentially hazardous situations that may arise.

Things to Do If You Smell Gas in the House

  • No flames or sparks
  • Shut off the gas
  • Leave the building
  • Report the leak
  • Do not return to your building
  • Get your system thoroughly checked
  • Take the sniff test
We highly recommend that you install propane gas detectors in your home.

Carbon Monoxide (CO)

Cigarettes, burning fuel oil, wood, natural gas, and propane produce a colorless, odorless, tasteless, and toxic gas called carbon monoxide. High levels of carbon monoxide can be extremely dangerous. It can make you dizzy or cause flu-like symptoms.

Call 911 or your local fire department if you or a family member is showing signs of CO poisoning. Turn off any appliances you suspect may be releasing CO, and open all windows to allow entry of fresh air.

Call our experienced team to thoroughly check your propane appliances and related venting systems. We can also install UL-listed CO detectors on every level of your home. Bank on us to properly maintain the detectors as well.

Here are some tips to help reduce the risk of CO poisoning.
  • Don't use a gas oven or range-top burners for space heating
  • Don't use portable heaters indoors unless they are designed and approved for indoor use
  • Don't use your barbeque grill indoors
  • Get your appliance exhaust vents regularly checked for blockage
Improper appliance operation can also generate high CO levels. Call our team if you notice soot deposits on your appliances and vents, get unfamiliar odors, or if there is increased moisture inside of windows.
